All Round Healing
Was having a little ponder about the healing of the woman with the continuous hemorrhaging for 12 years (puts my monthly moans over earlier years in the shade!), and how in Mark 5 verse 34 Jesus says “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
The Greek word translated here as “healed” actually means “saved”, so here Jesus means both physical healing “be freed from your suffering” (and maybe emotional healing from her wretched existence of being shunned by people for 12 years, since anyone having contact with her was made ceremonially unclean as shown in Lev.15:25-33, and also the pain, frustration and disappointment hinted at in verse 26, where despite spending all she had on medical treatments she grew worse rather than better and “suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors”. The Jewish Talmud apparently preserves a record of medicines and treatments prescribed for illnesses of this sort!) and the spiritual salvation that comes through finding forgiveness “go in peace”.
And this brought to mind the story of the paralysed man let down by his friends through the roof of the house in Capernaum (Mark 2) where Jesus saw the man’s need need of saving – physical healing and his sins forgiven. Not either/or but both! Do we?
