Grasping or Humble?
I just love the beautiful passage in Philippians 2 where Paul speaks of Jesus, who after all, had equal status with God Almighty, but instead of grasping or clinging onto all the advantages and radiant glory of heaven, no matter what, set aside all the privileges of deity, becoming human, firstly as a vulnerable newborn baby needing a warm breast and constant changing of soiled strips of cloth, and as an adult taking on the status of a lowly servant, extravagantly spending his whole life for others. What an incredible story line, rivalling any novel!
What has got me praying though, are the verses 3-5 before, where we’re encouraged to have the same attitude as Jesus! Now that’s a tough assignment – such humility just doesn’t seem to come naturally! The Message puts it like this: “Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves……………..”
I’ve made a little prayer list from these verses in the NLT:
This Christmas, may I not be selfish
Stop being so concerned to make a good impression on others
Be truly humble, thinking of others as better than myself not judging them in a superior way
Not just think only of my own affairs and agenda, but recognise the plans of others,
Look out not only for my interests, but take an interest in others too, promoting them before me.
And to twinkle in the darkness like a star! (v.15) Will you join me?
