Many of us deep down inside can feel like rubbish, or even at our worst times like filthy smelly rotting refuse. I always used to like the song years ago, (perhaps by Ishmael?), that had the lines
“He took me from the dustbin,
And treats me like a star”
I’m really glad about that! The sentiment probably came from 1 Sam.2:8:
“He lifts the poor from the dust
and the needy from the garbage dump.
He sets them among princes,
placing them in seats of honour.”
I remember a very down-trodden, colourless, old lady coming to The Stable for prayer many years ago. She had worked hard as a live-in servant all her working days, and had lived a sad, joyless and loveless life – and I didn’t have a clue how to start praying with her! So after a “Help!” one for myself, I started a few waffley sort of prayers for her. And then suddenly, Jesus spoke to her and called her his ‘Princess’, and her face lit up with a beauty that was astonishing, and the shabby woollen hat on her head could have been a jewel-encrusted tiara. That was a powerful life-changing experience for both of us.
Our Heavenly Dad breathed into me a new idea the other day explaining that, if we let Him, He takes away from us all of our rubbish, waste, refuse, the ugly and unwanted stuff that we hate in ourselves etc. and gradually decomposes it all, in time breaking down the toxins, recycling everything to be royal compost, nourishing fertilizer, rich in nutrients – nothing is wasted; he transforms and uses everything to create and landscape beautiful gardens out of the people’s lives that we touch.
Well, isn’t that something! I am no longer garbage, fit only for the dustbin or ash heap, or a hidden corner of the garden; no, I am wholesome compost to be dug in and used to help others flourish and bloom. Levington’s Multi-purpose. I like that!
